Myth and fact about Domestic Violence?

  • Domestic violence is a family issue. We should not intervene.

    • Fact: Domestic violence has social costs, including medical expenses in treating victims, legal cost, lost of work hours and productivity, and it involves societal belief and value, etc... In fact, the World Health Organization in 2002 has defined violence including domestic violence as public health issue which requires the whole society to respond.


  • Woman should obey her father before marriage and be submissive to her husband once she is married. In her old age, she should follow her son's will.

    • Fact: Everyone is born to be equal. There should be mutual respect within a family and no subordinate relationship should exist.


  • My husband sponsored me to immigrate to Canada. I will lose my permanent resident status if I leave him.

    • Fact: A woman who has permanent resident status will not lose that status or be removed from Canada only because she leaves an abusive relationship. This is true even if her abusive partner is her sponsor.


  • He is my husband. I have to have sex with him whenever he wants even against my will or without my consent.

    • Fact: Forcing someone to have sex is sexual abuse even they are in spousal relationship. In many countries, marital rape is a crime. Hence, it is important to have an understanding on different types of abuse.
