When you think that domestic violence cases are very rare and you are unfortunately being one of these cases, you are wrong. According to the "Family violence in Canada: A statistical profile 2005", we have the following information:
- 7% of Canadians 15 years of age and over in a current or previous common law union experienced spousal violence in the previous 5 years, i.e. there are 653,000 women in Canadians are suffering from domestic violence.
- Of which, 23% women reported being beaten, choked or threatened with or had a gun or knife used against them by their intimate partners.
- Besides, of which 21% of women were the targets of more than 10 violent incidents at the hands of their partners.
The above figures have shown the tip of the iceberg. Within 7% Canadians have experienced abuse, 34% have turned to a formal help agency. We hope that these figures would decrease once the abusers know that our society has zero tolerance of Domestic Violence.
