Why We Mentor Students
We see students as the next generation of community activists, and we have a long history of mentoring them. Students make a difference from their first day. When community members see young people take an interest in their issues, it builds trust across generations.
Location
Hybrid. Mix of remote work and in-person events.
Responsibilities
Students' tasks will be assigned based on their interests, field of study, and experience. They include, but are not limited to:

Conducting research and writing;

Conducting field research with community members;

Conducting outreach (in-person and digital);

Creating educational community resources;

Designing and leading presentations or workshops for community members;

Preparing briefs; and
-
Supporting CCNCTO programs and community research/advocacy projects.
Qualifications
CCNCTO is led by Chinese Canadians and works with the Chinese Canadian community. That's why we're looking for placement students with lived experience as Chinese or Chinese Canadian.
Students need English and basic skills in at least one Chinese dialect, such as Mandarin, Cantonese, or Fujianese.
Experience in community outreach, organizing campaigns, or non-profit work is an asset, but not required. We'll shape each placement around the student's interests and field of study.
What You Will Get
Working with the community

Students learn community-led work, which means treating community members as experts and working alongside them. Because they work directly with the people affected, they see the results of their work up close.
Check-ins and Feedback

You'll be paired with a staff member who meets with you weekly. It's your time to share progress, talk through challenges, plan the week ahead, and ask for help.

Once a month, your mentor will talk to you about what you're doing well and where you can grow.
A flexible, hybrid schedule

You'll split your time between remote work and time in the community. You'll learn to run workshops, plan events, and manage your own projects.
