We encourage folks to read the community research report

  • Full English report

Findings about anti-Chinese racism in the report are strongly aligned with what we see in our communities. We continue to see anti-Asian and anti-Chinese racism and anti-immigrant rhetoric increasingly normalized in online and offline settings. Racism, xenophobia, and hate are impacting everyone in our communities; across demographics, youth, international students, young workers, migrant workers, frontline workers, and seniors have experienced and/or witnessed anti-Chinese racism, anti-Asian racism, and/or anti-immigrant sentiments. These experiences not only harm individuals but also deepen social divides and fear within our neighborhoods. Either targets of hate or bystanders, folks have consistently called for more public education to tackle hate.

Findings in the report are strongly aligned with current work that CCNCTO has prioritized since COVID-19.

Education and awareness: offering workshops and resources to educate folks about racism and its impacts and about their rights, and help folks access support and community

Community outreach: connecting with frontline workers in grocery, restaurant, retail, factory, and care sectors, international students, and other working-class folks

Building community capacity: creating programs that allow marginalized communities to build skills (outreach, facilitation, public speaking) and knowledge (understanding systemic racism and exploitation) to improve civic and social engagement

  • Since COVID-19, we have expanded the number of our programs supporting youth and workers in building solidarity

Calling for systemic change: supporting campaigns that seek to end the exploitation of racialized and marginalized students and workers (ex. tied work permits, supporting Status For All, supporting 10 paid sick days) and reform campaigns that build more inclusive communities (ex. building an anti-racist education system)

While this work continues on at CCNCTO, the community research report highlights the urgent need for more government funding for enhancing public awareness and education about anti-Chinese racism and building solidarity between Chinese and other racialized and marginalized communities. We urge municipal, provincial, and federal governments to respond to these growing concerns and needs in our communities.
