This page highlights some of our key work in the Worker Organizing Project, such as fighting for wage justice and immigration regularization. Our members are also active in other campaigns, building ties with other labour rights organizations and connecting with their network of peers and workers to strengthen our strategies.
Supporting workers facing wage theft, immigration issues, healthcare barriers, and workplace challenges
From 2022 to 2024, CCNCTO began to conduct outreach regularly. In 2022, we focused many outreach activities on Chinese grocery stores, restaurants, and plazas. From 2023 onwards, we expanded outreach to schools (high schools, colleges, and universities) and community centers to reach more youth, international students, and parents. Our focus has remained to reach workers in precarious and frontline jobs and build trust within the community.

Key Issues Workers Face
Wage Theft
Experiences of wage theft and exploitation have been common among many Chinese workers we have connected to. It is important to recognize that these are common experiences because employers take advantage of information and service gaps to exploit Asian (im)migrant workers.
Immigration Issues
Many Chinese community members experience issues relating to their immigration status; many issues relating to their immigration status negatively impacts their working, renting, and healthcare experiences.
Housing exploitation also continues, with some community members forced to pay several months of rent upfront or live in unsafe, illegal housing conditions.
While these loopholes allow individuals and corporations to take advantage of Asian migrants, anti-Asian and anti-immigrant sentiments frame Chinese (im)migrants as the villains in the housing market. We are blamed for the lack of affordable housing, which allows the government to avoid taking action.
Difficulties in Healthcare
Many community members face barriers to healthcare because of service and information gaps, including limited Chinese-language information and difficulty accessing services in English. Those with precarious immigration status may also be excluded from healthcare programs, leaving many without adequate care and leading to worse health outcomes.

Information sharing
CCNCTO shares accessible bilingual information with workers and community members through outreach, worker calendars, resource pages, and workshops co-hosted with partner organizations, usually 4-6 times per year. These resources help people understand economic injustice, workplace rights, immigration pathways, and changing health information.
We also connect community members with local clinics and nurse practitioners that provide language-accessible services. By sharing information with partner agencies, we are better able to support community members across different needs.
Individual casework
Staff supported workers and community members with wage-related issues, including EI, ESA, Ontario Works, wage theft, immigration, housing, healthcare access, form completion, and school-related matters.
The goal with individual casework is to help community members in the short term while building their capacity to advocate for long term change that will benefit them and others in the community.
Report writing
In 2023 Our community report “Chinese Migrant Workers' Experiences Working With Legal Representatives In Immigration” highlighted scam, abuse, and exploitation by immigration agents, consultants, and lawyers. We also shared best practices for Chinese migrant workers regarding how to protect your rights while working with immigration professionals.
Resource Creation
Creating the Senior Handbook Resource to spread awareness about barriers faced by marginalized Chinese working seniors, and improve access to community programs and services.
Movement Building
Strengthening our partnerships to broader worker movements to show Chinese workers’ leadership. This includes showing up for and taking on organizing roles in different rallies, reinforcing Chinese representation in social justice, etc.
Speaking at a public rally in September 2024: Status for All ensures that community members will not be exploited by gaps in the healthcare, employment, and immigration system. A CCNCTO member and international student, Hex, spoke publicly about this issue.
Leadership Building
We hosted workshops that help workers build skills to advocate for their rights. Workshops covered topics including labor rights, workplace conflicts, employment standards, and immigration services.
We developed worker leadership by supporting workers to organize peers and coworkers, facilitate workshop discussions, and share their experiences to mobilize others. This helps workers advocate for their own rights, support one another, and build stronger solidarity in the community.
We support marginalized Chinese workers who face exploitation without nowhere accessible to go. Together, we have the power to change that! The problems workers face exists because the government let bosses and landlords to exploit them.
Our goal remains
Each time we support and connect with more workers, our community grows stronger.
