Ripple Effect 2010 - Civic Leaderhip Training for Chinese Youth

Introduction

Ripple Effect 2010 is a 4-month leadership training program for Chinese youth between 18 – 30 years old residing in Toronto. It aims to nurture civic leadership within the Chinese community for the development of an inclusive and healthy Toronto.

From April to July 2010, twenty Chinese youth across Toronto will participate in

  • Reflecting upon the past, present and future of Chinese communities in Toronto.
  • Inquiring into issues around identity, multiculturalism, equity and social justice.
  • Public speaking, media & communication training, advocacy, community organizing, project development, and event organizing.
  • Partnering with community leaders and like-minded people in making the changes you want to see in the community
  • Learning about how City government works – local planning, elections and how decisions are made at the City.
  • Engaging and empowering the Chinese community in the social planning of Toronto.

You will have the opportunities to discuss issues that are important to you as well as the well-being of the Chinese community in Toronto. You will develop ideas and projects with other participants of the program using the skills and knowledge learned from the program.

Program Outline


Day 1, April 10 (Sat, Full Day Workshop)
- Laying the Ground
* Participants Self-Introduction
* Introduction to CCNCTO and Ripple Effect 2010
* Team building activities

Day 2, April 11 (Sun, Full Day Workshop) – Our Stories: My Toronto
* Chinese Canadian history, both general and local
* Chinese participation in the City of Toronto
* Chinese past, present and future – an intergenerational dialogues on leadership, activism, and civic engagement

Day 3, April 24 (Sat, Full Day Workshop) - Critical Multiculturalism
* Identity, Culture and Soicety
* Bias and Racism – Deconstructing Self and Others
* Equity, Social Justice, Diversity 

Day 4, May 1 (Sat, Full Day Workshop) – Research for Change
* Developing skills in Community Action Research

Day 5, May 15 (Sat, Full Day Workshop) – Developing group projects
* Identify issues of concerns and develop group projects

Day 6, May 29 (Sat, Full Day Workshop ) – Toronto Civics I

Day 7, tbd (a weekday) – Toronto Civics II

Day 8, June 26 (Sat, Full Day Workshop)
– Skills Development

Day 9, July 3 (Sat)
– Skills Development

Throughout July
– Group Meetings and Project Development

August 7 (Sat) - Media Event: Graduation and Presentation

  1. please visit this site regularly for updates about the program outline. Note that the content of the program will change depending on the knowledge and skill level of the participants.
  2. Most workshops are full day workhops (9.00am – 5pm) except those that will take place in July and August 2010.
  3. the program is FREE for its participants. TTC tokens will be available upon request.

  

Potential Participants

Potential participants of the program should be between 18-30 years old. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are living in Toronto. You should have a passion in social justice, equity, as well as community development, engagement, mobilizing and advocacy work.
