The participation of parents is vital to a student's success. Educators from both the Toronto District School Board and the Ontario Ministry of Education agree that while schools provide the academic learning environment, parental involvement at home may help the students not only to overcome challenges in the learning process, but also to establish positive studying habits and values.
CCNCTO, along with our community partners, has raised important educational issues faced by Chinese Canadians and newcomers. In 2005 for example, CCNCTO campaigned to show how literacy tests required for graduation from high school discriminated against ESL students. Changes were then made to the test to make it more equitable. It is important for members of the Chinese Canadian community to voice our concerns about these and other issues. We encourage parents to familiarize with the curriculum, expectations, and other aspects of education in order to better support and communicate with their child. We also encourage parents to get involved in their children's school council or to join a Chinese parent's council at their local school or with an organization such as the Toronto Federation of Chinese Parents.
